Baptism at All Hallows

Holy Baptism

"Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit in Christ's Body, the Church" (Book of Common Prayer, page 298).  From the earliest period of Christian history, baptism has been the gateway into membership in the Christian Church.

Baptism elevates us from our natural state to become CHILDREN OF GOD.  It signifies:

UNION with Jesus in his death and resurrection.  This union gives us the strength to carry on Jesus' mission, by sharing our faith with others.

BIRTH into God's family, the Church.  Baptism initiates us into the community of the one, holy catholic, and apostolic Church.

FORGIVENESS of sins.  Through Baptism, we are given God's grace and cleaned of our sins.

NEW LIFE in the Holy Spirit.  As we become new people - fuller and richer than we were in our natural state - full of the Holy Spirit.

Holy Baptism is appropriately administered within the Eucharist as the chief service on a Sunday or other feast.

Each candidate for Holy Baptism is to be sponsored by one or more baptized persons.  Sponsors must by baptized members of a Christian community.  Sponsors of adults and older children present their candidates and thereby signify their endorsement of the candidates and their intention to support them by prayer and example in their Christian life.  Sponsors of infants, commonly called godparents, present their candidates, make promises in their own names, and also take vows on behalf of their candidates.

Who May Be Baptized at All Hallows?

All who wish to follow Jesus Christ and seek All Hallows Parish as a place where they intend to grow into the full stature of Christ.

Older Children and Adults: Please contact the Rector to set up pre-baptism meetings to learn about the Sacrament of Baptism and the tenets of the Christian Faith.

Infants: Parents and godparents, please contact the church office to find out about the next Baptism Preparation Class.

In the Episcopal Church, we believe that Holy Baptism is a Sacrament - an outward and visible sign through the inward and spiritual grace of God is conferred freely upon the baptized person. Because of this sacramental and gracious nature of baptism, people of all ages may become baptized.  Older children and adults learn about the Christian faith into which they will be initiated.  For infants, the parents and godparents take the vows on their behalf and promise to raise them up in the church and see to it that they also reaffirm these vows at their Confirmation.

A person can be baptized at any age, and we welcome all who wish to be baptized at All Hallows Parish.  To schedule a baptism contact the Parish Office at 410.798.0808 or e-mail
